The Information Technology (IT) Department provides accurate, timely and cost-effective information technologies and services to city staff to assist them in managing resources for the effective and efficient delivery of city services. IT strives to maintain an infrastructure that is reliable, adaptable and scalable that assures the security, integrity and availability of information. We evaluate emerging technologies for the purpose of enhancing operational functionality within the city while minimizing costs.
The IT Department implements, maintains and troubleshoots the city's entire computer and network environment, as well as state of the art VoIP telephone systems. IT also provides support to multiple audio-visual technologies and platforms throughout the city. Staffed by only two people with part-time contractor assistance, the IT Department directly supports approximately 150 personal computers and laptops for a 125 member workforce distributed across seven different buildings. Support extends to "after hours" for complete 24 hour/365 day coverage.
Components include three, high-end Dell PowerEdge servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 in a totally virtualized VMware environment, two Dell EqualLogic virtualized storage arrays, two Dell PowerEdge servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 in a specialized environment, one UNIX server, a private, fiber optic backbone, Category 6 cable infrastructures, network and personal computer hardware, software, backup devices, Exchange Server 2010 e-mail and broadband Internet service. Additionally, the city employs specialized software and system hardware to support unique Police, Fire, Finance, Utilities, Court, Public Works, Animal Control and Development Services data processing. Live Oak hosts the city of Selma’s Police data processing, providing hardware, software, communications and infrastructure support with 24 hour/365 day coverage. A high tech digital Police patrol car video recording system and modern meeting-room multimedia systems add another dimension to the variety of technologies deployed. The IT Department provides administrative backing for Live Oak's official Web site and provides operating system and application program training to employees.
Lightning fast, resource-rich server hardware coupled with modern software provides significantly improved speed and functionality to all of our information processes. The installation of layer-3 Ethernet switches and Category 6 cabling in every building increased network speeds to Gigabit to every desktop. A virtual server configuration with a local disaster recovery site and a reliable, automated, off-site data backup system provide redundant access to critical data, enabling recovery and contingency capabilities as never before. A modern firewall appliance provides intrusion detection, while enterprise anti-virus/anti-spyware protection and Web site content filtering provide protection from unwanted software threats wherever and whenever they arise. A time-saving spam filter eliminates dangerous and annoying e-mail messages before they reach user mailboxes. A virtual private network (VPN) allows secure network access from remote locations, enabling business transactions to occur from virtually anywhere an Internet connection exists. Outlook Web Access (OWA) service allows users to operate city e-mail resources securely from offsite locations as well.
